Steve Bullock (birth name: Stephen Clark Bullock) is an American politician (the 24th Governor of Montana) and attorney. He is a Democrat who got first elected in 2012. He has been the chairman of the National Governors Association since 2018 and is eyeing the seat of the President of the United States in 2020 as a Democratic candidate.
Bullock practiced law as a legal counsel to the Secretary of State of Montana before becoming the Executive Assistant Attorney General and acting Chief Deputy Attorney General of Montana. He then became an attorney for Steptoe & Johnson under private practice. He then taught at the George Washington University Law School before returning to Montana to open up his own law firm.
He served as the Attorney General of Montana from 2009 to 2013 after being elected in 2008. By 2013, he has made an announcement on his candidacy for governor of Montana on September 7, 2011. He won the Democratic primary with 87% of the vote and defeated Republican nominee Rick Hill in the general election with 48% of the vote. He again won in 2016 with 50.2% of the vote, defeating Republican nominee Greg Gianforte.

Stephen Clark is the son of Penny Clark, a school board trustee, and Mike Bullock, a teacher and administrator. Bullock was raised in Helena and his parents got divorced while he was in grade school.

Lisa Bullock (Lisa Downs) is Steve’s wife. She is also from Helena in Montana, born in an Irish family of six and raised a Catholic. She is the eldest in the family to a father who was a psychology professor and a mother who was a nurse. She got her degree in Math and Computer Science from Carroll College and a Master’s degree in applied mathematics at USC in Los Angeles.
Lisa is a Research and Development Manager for Court View Justice Solutions. she previously worked as a math and computer science teacher in high schools. The couple has three children: Caroline, Alexandria, and Cameron.

Steve is thought to have had an extra-marital affair with the Montana Department of Commerce Director, Meg O’Leary. The story began in 2014 when O’Leary was spotted flying with the governor in the state’s plane to a Paul McCartney concert in Missoula that Lisa Bullock had been invited.

After receiving his Law degree, Bullock worked as the chief legal counsel of the then Montana Secretary of State Mike Cooney. For four years, he was with the Montana Department of Justice under Attorney General Joe Mazurek. He began as an executive assistant attorney general, and later as an acting chief deputy (1997–2001). He also served as legislative director, coordinating the Attorney General’s legislative efforts during that time too. Bullock wrote the landmark opinion that guaranteed public access to streams and rivers when he was an Assistant Attorney General.
In 2000, he attempted to run for Montana Attorney General but he lost the seat to Mike McGrath, Chief Justice of the Montana Supreme Court. In 2008, he was the Democratic nominee for Attorney General and he won the primaries. He also won the election with 52.64% of the vote against Republican Tim Fox. He is known to have pushed for tougher drunken driving laws and a crackdown on prescription drug abuse as well as introducing 24/7 Sobriety Program for repeat DUI offenders statewide.
On September 7, 2011, Bullock announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Governor of Montana in 2012. He won the primary with 87% of the vote. The election was held on November 6, 2012, and Bullock defeated his Republican rival, ex-US Representative Rick Hill with 48.9% of the votes to Hill’s 47.3%. 3.8% of the vote was pulled by Libertarian candidate Ron Vandevender. He has been the governor of Montana since 2013.
