Sidley Austin LLP, is a general practice law firm based in the United States, with a focus on expertise in transactional and legal action matters. It was formed in Chicago by Norman Williams and John Leverett Thompson in 1866. Sidley was created as the partnership of Williams & Thompson.

Sidley Austin Chicago

Sidley Austin Chicago offices hold the headquarters of the law company. The firm was formed in Chicago in 1866 by Norman Williams and John Leverett Thompson as the partnership of Williams & Thompson. Anne E. Rea is the managing partner of Sidley’s Chicago office and the leader of Sidley’s ERISA Litigation practice area team.

Oppressed by the Great Depression, the company experienced dramatic revenue decline until the New Deal revitalized the capital markets in the 1930s. In one of the first transactions under the Securities Act of 1933, the firm represented Halsey, Stuart Co., Chicago-based underwriter.

The Pullman Company, the manufacturer of specialty sleeping railway cars, was one of the first clients of the company. Western Union Telegraph Company was also one of the other early customers. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the company represented numerous insurance companies, including the Equitable Life Assurance Society.

Sidley Austin New York

The Sidley Austin New York office, established in 1914, has long been dedicated to fostering positive social change. They make a difference by exploiting their resources to empower and support the underserved in the community.  Sam Gandhi is the managing partner of Sidley’s New York office.

Sidley Austin DC

Its Washington, D.C. branch was established in 1963 with Gensler designing the offices. Sidley Austin DC signed a 15-year lease to stay in its current building at 1501 K. In 2012, it was nearing the end of the lease and so, they requested Gensler’s assistance evaluating options for renewal versus relocation.

Gensler prepared several test fit plan studies for a renewed Sidley occupancy at 1501 K and potential new properties. The studies by Gensler occurred after a series of interviews and meetings to establish a space requirement program.

The office has been largely transformed from its much darker and more sectionalized earlier version. The fully finished space was launched around July 2016. The sixth-floor reception area has a large light-well down the center that used to be paneled off. The firm’s original pieces were paid for by local artists, including Steve Cushner, Julie Wolfe and Linling Lu.

According to DC managing partner, Mark Hopson, Sidley’s DC office has been open for 52 years. It has eight floors at 1501 K, with options to grow and take over the entire building. The former mailroom downstairs and storage for boxes and papers has been opened up as a common area with a working double-sided fireplace, cafeteria, and 400-person multi-purpose room.

Sidley Austin Los Angeles

Sidley’s Los Angeles office was established in 1980. It is one of the largest law offices in Los Angeles County. Dan Clivner is a member of Sidley’s Executive Committee and the managing partner of the greater Los Angeles offices. The Houston office co-managing partners are Cliff Vrielink and Kevin Lewis. The duo believes that collaboration fuels growth. The firm opened a Houston office in early 2012 and covers nearly 50,000 square feet in Wells Fargo Plaza, at 1000 Louisiana St., since early 2013.

According to reports by the Houston Business Journal, the office had around 12 lawyers and seven founding partners when it opened. When the firm hired five new partners from Andrews Kurth Kenyon LLP in October 2018, Sidley had about 55 lawyers in its Houston office.
