‘Groundhog Day’ features WKMG reporter

On this Groundhog Day, we can’t help but think of the classic Bill Murray movie from 1993. There’s a local connection, which WKMG-Channel 6 noted Tuesday. The boy who falls from a tree in “Groundhog Day” is reporter Shaun Chaiyabhat. What does he remember? “The movie was filmed near my hometown, in Woodstock, Ill.,” he told me by email. “The role of Boy In Tree required a child who was able to do the stunt. The movie’s stunt coordinator held tryouts at the gym where I was training as a gymnast, and I won the part.

“Onset, Bill Murray was so kind. I had never been involved in anything like that before. After a long day of filming, he still took the time to show me around and invite me into his trailer for soda and snacks. “After filming, [director] Harold Ramis sent his limo driver to my house. He delivered one of the biggest Christmas gifts I ever got as a child. It was a train set. “Although coincidental, my current career path was not influenced by the movie.”

Chaiyabhat’s last day at CBS affiliate WKMG will be Feb. 18. He is moving to Boston to report for WCVB, the ABC affiliate. He has been at WKMG since 2010. And thank you, Shaun, for being part of movie history.
