Sharon , an anchor at WNCN CBS North Carolina since 2005, left the station March 1. 2018. WNCN news director Ed Trauschke first announced the departure in an email to staff. The email was shared with The News & Observer. In the note, Trauschke recounted some of Sharon’s work while at WNCN.
“During her 12 and a half years here at the station, Sharon has covered some of North Carolina’s biggest stories. … Her anchoring and reporting on stories like the Chapel Hill Student murders, Hurricane Matthew and the recent Confederate statue demonstrations played a key role in our coverage of these important stories.”
When Sharon first arrived at WNCN in 2005, she was as a reporter and morning news anchor. Prior to WNCN, Sharon anchored the evening news at WCTV and WTLH in Tallahassee. She has also worked on the CBS News program “Eye to Eye with Connie Chung.”
She began anchoring weekday evenings at WNCN in 2014, co-anchoring the 5, 5:30, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts alongside Sean Maroney. Her workmate Maroney announced his departure January 24 2018 and his last day at WNCN is February 14 2018. Since she joined WNCN, Sharon has covered a wide range of breaking and feature stories. Sharon was the first reporter to interview the fathers of three Muslim students murdered execution style by their neighbor in Chapel Hill, NC. She updated their stories throughout the federal investigation. She anchored extended coverage of protestors in Durham, NC after the toppling of a Confederate monument, and the fight against HB2. Sharon also anchored extended hurricane coverage and was there when a NC teen found out he had a heart donor to the day he walked out of the hospital with a new heart.
She reported from the Red Carpet for the Tony’s, interviewed Ellen on her show, hosts from The Talk, Extra and acted on The Young & the Restless. She profiled Make A Wish children and raised millions of airline miles and thousands of dollars for a boy whose face was mauled off by a dog.
The station has seen a good amount of turnover since being purchased by Nextstar in January 2017, but in recent months, WNCN has added positions: meteorologists Paul Heggen and Erin Clanahan; and weekday morning anchor Taniya Wright.
