Satya Nadella Achievements

As the CEO, Nadella has led Microsoft through major projects. They include moving the company to cloud computing and the development of one of the largest cloud infrastructures in the world.

He once served as the senior vice-president of Research and Development (R&D) for the Online Services Division as well as vice-president of the Microsoft Business Division. He was later made the president of Microsoft’s $19 billion Server and Tools Business. It is during this time that he led the company’s transformation in business and technology culture from client services to cloud infrastructure and services.

He has been credited for helping bring Microsoft’s database, Windows Server and developer tools to its Azure cloud. There was growth in Cloud Services revenue  to $20.3 billion in June 2013 from $16.6 billion when he took over in 2011.

His previous positions are:

  • The President of the Server & Tools Division (9 February 2011 – February 2014)
  • Senior Vice-President of Research and Development for the Online Services Division (March 2007 – February 2011)
  • The Vice-President of the Business Division
  • The Corporate Vice-President of Business Solutions and Search & Advertising Platform Group
  • The Executive Vice-President of Cloud and Enterprise group
On 4 February 2014, he was announced as the new CEO of Microsoft, the third chief executive in the company’s history, following Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer.

In October 2014, he made a statement that women should not ask for a raise but instead trust the system and this brought him controversy. He was criticized for his remarks and he apologized later on Twitter. He later sent an email to Microsoft employees admitting he was “Completely wrong”.

His tenure at Microsoft has changed the company’s direction. Majorly because he has emphasized on openness  to working with companies and technologies with which Microsoft also competes, including Apple Inc., Dropbox, Salesforce and IBM. He also proclaimed that “Microsoft ♥ Linux”, unlike preceding Microsoft campaigns against the Linux operating system. This led to Microsoft joining the Linux Foundation in 2016 as a Platinum member.

The company also revised its mission statement to “empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more”, under Nadella’s leadership. His key goal has been transforming Microsoft’s corporate culture into one that values continual learning and growth.

His stewardship has seen Microsoft acquire a series of other high-profile companies,  to redirect Microsoft’s focus. The first major acquisition was of Mojang, a Swedish game company best known for the popular freeform computer building game Minecraft, in late 2014. Mojang was acquired for $2.5 billion. The purchase was followed by purchasing Xamarin and LinkedIn in 2016, then GitHub in 2018. By September 2018, Microsoft’s stocks tripled with a 27% annual growth rate. This has led to him being viewed as having done well as the CEO.
