Sarah Jo Pender Biography

Sarah Jo Pender was born on May 29, 1979. she is an American woman convicted along with her former boyfriend, Richard Edward Hull, for murdering their roommates, Andrew Cataldi and Tricia Nordman, on October 24, 2000, in Indiana.

She has claimed ever since that she is a victim of a wrongful conviction. She came to national attention in August 2008 after she escaped from the Rockville Correctional Facility and was featured on America’s Most Wanted. She was recaptured by police in December at a house.

On September 26, 2013, Pender was interviewed on the British documentary Women Behind Bars with Trevor McDonald.

On April 15, 2016, her case was on Investigation Discovery’s show A Stranger My Home. Her episode is titled “Master Manipulators”

Sarah Jo Pender Escape

Pender escaped from Rockville Correctional Center, a medium-security prison 50 miles (80 km) west of Indianapolis, on August 4, 2008, with the aid of prison guard Scott Spitler Sr, and former cellmate Jamie Long.
At the time of Pender’s evasion, Scott Spitler had been a corrections officer at Rockville Correctional Facility for five years. The previous month, he had been placed in a pre-trial diversion program for a misdemeanor charge of battery. Although he was married and had children, he was also engaged in an ongoing sexual relationship with Pender behind bars.

Jamie Long was an older married woman. She had a criminal history of two felonies and 12 to 15 other convictions. Both women had met in 2007 while they were inmates at the Marion County Jail. They formed an intimate relationship and Long referred to Pender as her “wife” while they served time at the Indiana Women’s Prison in Indianapolis. After her release, Long frequently visited Pender.

Sarah Jo Pender Richard Edward Hull

in June – July Sarah meets Richard hull a convicted felon and a drug dealer at a concert by band Phish. they began dating and after some months they move in together.

on October 24, 2000, hull convinces Sarah to buy him a 12 gauge gun because he could not do it himself because of his criminal record.later that evening hull uses the gun to kill Andrew Cataldi and Tricia Nordman and when Sarah returns and learns what his boyfriend has done.

she helps him cover up by wrapping the bodies with a blanket and driving the bodies in a trash bin in the south meridian street.
on October 27, 2000 hull was arrested in connection to the murder. Hull’s attorney gives prosecutors a letter he claims was penned by Pender in which she confesses to killing the roommates.

In 2005, Hull repeatedly admitted in court that the letter is a fake.

September 2001: Pender and another inmate, convicted child molester Floyd Pennington, strike up a jailhouse pen-pal romance. The two arrange to fake illnesses and meet at Wishard Memorial Hospital on Sept. 22, 2001. Pennington tells police that during this meeting Pender confided in him that she manipulated Hull into killing Cataldi and Nordman. Authorities at the jail intercept a letter Pender wrote to Pennington, dated Sept. 22, 2001, confirming the two were together at Wishard.

July 2002: A Marion County jury finds Pender guilty of the murders of Cataldi and Nordman. During Aug. 22, 2002, sentencing hearing, Deputy Prosecutor Larry Sells calls Pender the “female Charles Manson” and argues that she had manipulated her boyfriend to kill the roommates in a dispute over drugs and money.

August 2002: Marion Superior Court Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson sentences Pender to 110 years in prison.

January 2003: Hull pleads guilty to double murder; Magnus-Stinson sentences him to 75 years in prison.august 4, 2008: Pender escapes from Rockville Correctional Facility with the help of Correctional Officer Scott Spitler and former cellmate Jamie Long. Spitler and Long are later arrested and convicted for their roles in Pender’s escape.

Dec. 22, 2008: Police arrest Pender on the north side of Chicago, where she had been living and working under the name Ashley Thompson.

In the film, Sarah Jo Pender (Jenna Dewan-Tatum), a student, is sent to prison after her two roommates were murdered by her boyfriend Rick (Greyston Holt). She claims her innocence. After one of her appeals is denied, she escapes with the help of Prison Guard Scott Spitler (Nels Lennarson) and her friend Jamie Long (MacKenzie Phillips).

Marshall Sean Harlan (Steve Bacic) unsuccessfully pursues her and has to rely on the help of TV show America’s Most Wanted. After Pender is captured by local police officers, he picks her up and drives her back to prison.

Sarah still serves her time in jail after her appeal was rejected .now Pender, meanwhile, spends time in that small cell, reading, writing letters and praying for the day she is free.
