Ovince Saint Preux Biography

On April 8, 1983, Ovince Saint Preux was born. He is a Haitian-American mixed martial artist competing in the UFC’s light heavyweight division. Saint Preux has also competed for Strike Force, XFC, and Shark Fights as a professional competitor since 2008. He is known for his awkward fighting style and has become famous for winning multiple fights using the rare Von Flue choke submission.

Saint Preux was born to parents of Haitian immigrants in Immokalee, Florida. He attended Immokalee High School in Immokalee, Florida, where he wrestled, played for the football team’s defensive end, and ran track.

In college, he played Tennessee Volunteers before received letters of the varsity, in 2004 he graduated with a degree in sociology. But after failing in football career  Saint Preux gave up the sport and started to take an interest in martial arts as a form of training.

At the suggestion of his coach, Saint Preux, who is currently training at the Knoxville Martial Arts Academy in Knoxville, Tennessee, started to fight professionally.

Ovince Saint Preux College

From 2001 to 2004, Saint Preux played Tennessee Volunteers college football. He played primarily as a reserve on both defensive end and linebacker after redshirting in 2001.

He received letters of varsity in 2002 and 2004, appearing during his college career in seventeen games. He graduated with a degree in sociology in 2004 and started training in kickboxing and submission grappling.

In January 2013, its parent company Zuffa closed the Strikeforce organization and a majority of the Strikeforce fighters were transferred to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

For the  UFC debut preux was faced on April 27, 2013, by a newcomer Gian Villante, who accidentally poked Villante’s eye at ufc 159. Preux won the match through the judges ‘ decision as a result of an injury.
Preux faced Cody Donovan on August 17, 2013, at UFC Fight Night 26 for his second battle with the promotion. On January 15, 2014, at UFC Fight Night 35, he won the fight by knockout at 2:07 in the first round Preux was briefly linked to a fight against Thiago Silva. However, after the announcement, Silva pulled out of the bout less than 24 hours.

The match against Silva was rescheduled for March 15, 2014, at UFC 171. The match was canceled again as Silva was arrested on February 7, 2014, on charges of attempted murder. Instead, Preux fought Nikita Krylov at the event, winning a Von Flue choke in the first round. The rare submission win also earned his first Night Bonus Award performance from Saint Preux.

Ryan Jimmo was faced with preux at UFC 174 on June 14, 2014. He won the fight in the second round when Jimmo was verbally presented as a result of a broken arm blocking one of the kicks of Saint Preux.
On August 16, 2014, Preux faced Ryan Bader at the UFC Fight Night 47 main event. Through unanimous decision, he lost the fight.

On November 8, 2014, at UFC Fight Night 56, Saint was expected to face Rafael Cavalcante. Cavalcante, however, withdrew from the bout citing injury and was replaced by Francimar Barroso. However, it was announced on October 29 that Saint would step up in the main event against Maurício Rua to replace an injured Jimi Manuwa.

Despite being the underdog and fighting in Brazil’s home country of Rua, Saint was only 34 seconds into the first round winning the fight via knockout. Shogun’s loss to Preux was his professional career’s fastest defeat. The win also earned his second Night Bonus Award performance from Saint Preux.
On April 18, 2015, at UFC on Fox 15, Saint Preux confronted Patrick Cummins. In the first round, he won the fight through knockout.

On August 8, 2015, at UFC Fight Night 73, Saint Preux faced Glover Teixeira. He lost the fight back-and-forth in the third round by submission. The Fight of the Night honors was awarded to both participants.

On February 6, 2016, Preux faced Rafael Cavalcante at UFC Fight Night 82. He won the fight by unanimous decision, despite Preux injuring his ankle in the first round.

Preux was tabbed for the interim light heavyweight title on April 23, 2016, at UFC 197 filling in for Daniel Cormier as a short notice injury replacement to face Jon Jones. Through unanimous decision, Saint Preux lost. Saint Preux’s coach revealed that Jimi Manuwa faced the arm of Saint Preux at UFC 204 on October 8, 2016, in the second round. In the second round, he lost the fight by knockout.

On February 4, 2017, at UFC Fight Night 104, Preux was expected to face Jan Błachowicz. However, in mid-January, Błachowicz was pulled out of the fight and replaced by newcomer promoter Volkan Oezdemir. Through split decision, Saint Preux lost the fight. Fourteen out of 16 MMA media outlets scored the Saint Preux battle.

On April 22, 2017, Preux was in front of Marcos Rogério de Lima at UFC Fight Night 108. He defeated de Lima in the second round because of a Von Flue choke submission. With this victory, Saint Preux is the only fighter to win twice in the UFC through Von Flue choke.

It was expected that a rematch with Maurício Rua will take place at UFC Fight Night 117 on September 23, 2017. After Rua suffered an injury, the bout was changed and promptly replaced with Yushin Okami Saint Preux winning the fight in the first round via Von Flue choke, marking his third victory through this submission. This victory earned him the Night bonus performance.

On November 4, 2017, at UFC 217, Saint Preux stepped in to replace Patrick Cummins in a battle against Corey Anderson. Saint Preux won the fight in the opening minute of the third round after winning the first round by landing the more effective strikes and rocking Anderson in the final seconds and losing the second round due to Anderson’s wrestling.

He was expected to face Ilir Latifi on January 27, 2018, at UFC on Fox 27 with a $25,000 performance of the Night bonus award Preux. During a training session, however, Latifi was injured and he was forced to pull out of the fight. The bout was canceled as a result. The pair was rebooked and the bout was held at UFC on Fox 28 on February 24, 2018. In the first round, Saint Preux lost the fight through technical submission.

On June 23, 2018, at UFC Fight Night 132, Saint Preux faced Tyson Pedro. He won the fight in the first round through submission. This win earned him the Night Award for Performance.

On October 6, 2018, at UFC 229, Saint Preux faced Dominick Reyes. Through unanimous decision, he lost the fight.

On March 2, 2019, at UFC 235, Saint Preux was expected to face Misha Cirkunov. However, it was announced on February 11 that Saint Preux was injured and pulled out of the fight. Johnny Walker replaced him.

On April 13, 2019, at UFC 236, Saint Preux confronted Nikita Krylov in a rematch. Because of a rear-naked choke in round two, he lost the fight through submission.

Before preux met Anderson he had won two straight fights with the rare Von Flue choke. Corey Anderson is in a similar category to Saint Preux. He is an Ultimate Fighter winner who has won two-thirds of his UFC bouts but hasn’t strung together enough wins at any point to get a genuinely big fight. He has lost two of his last three matches.

Not only did Ovince Saint Preux have to try to defeat the most dangerous light heavyweight mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter on the planet in Jon Jones, he also had to do it for roughly three rounds with a broken arm.

That’s according to his coach, Joey Zonar, who told MMA Fighting the jury was still out in regards to surgery. “OSP” went all five rounds with “Bones” in the UFC 197 pay-per-view (PPV) main event last Sat. night (April 23, 2016) inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
