He began singing and dancing when he still a young boy at the age of fifteen in a local night clubs. after a few years later he traveled to New York performed under the name of Mickey Calin. his big breakthrough came when casting the film The BoyFriend(1954)&Catch Astar(1955)

At the age of 21, he auditioned for the role of Jerome Robbins of the ”Riff” in the master Broadway production of West  Side Story(1957-1959.he was good enough and had a good personal triumph.

On 1957 October, the studio reported interested in him.he was spotted by a talent scout Joyce Selznick. Selznick worked for Columbia Pictures, Columbia was a Youth talent organization.he signed a seven years contract in June 1958. he had been using the name ”Mickey Callin” but would use the original name ”Michael Callan”.

The role of Callan on Columbia Pictures at first produced prestige results by film They came to Cordura(1959)starring Gary Cooper.he gained more trust in Columbia Pictures, he was offered numerous projects including The Mountain Road, Let No Man Write My Epitaph and The Flying  Fontaines. (1959)

Callan was soon announced as one of 11 young names the studio would build up. he co-starred with Dick Clark Tuesday Weld in the movie Because They are Young(1960) and had a cameo in Pepe.he was unable to continue his West Side Story role of Riff in the film, because the contract had expired. but he appeared in a fantasy adventure movie Mysterious Island.

He was then reunited with Walley in the family comedy, Bon Voyage!in 1962 for Walt Disney.he also appeared in a big hit The Intents (1962) which was produced by Columbia Pictures. Columbia Pictures soon signed Callan to a six picture deal. he appeared as guest-starring in episodes of Tv series Twelve o’clock High and Breaking Point
