People’s Court Judge Milian | Marilyn Milian The People’s Court

In 2001 Milian joined The People’s Court as a judge, replacing Jerry Sheindlin. She became the first Latina arbitrator to preside over a court show. The show is the first arbitration-based reality court show and the second-longest-running court show in history.

Looking at The People’s Court’s previous arbiters, she is considerably more animated in her role. She is assertively loud and clear, Milan also motions and gesticulates wildly in interaction. Judge Milian also regularly even departs from the bench to interact with and excoriate the litigants. She is also known for being levelheaded and logical in her observations and also handling her cases. Although she is engaging, for the most part, she also dishes out a good-natured, lively sass at the litigants. She does not tolerate any disrespect from them too.

Marilyn informally speaks with her audience and also answers their various questions outside of the tapings of The People’s Court. She often quotes phrases from her grandmother from her Cuban heritage when addressing litigants. In admonishing a litigant who tried lying before her, Milian once stated, “No sabes ni adobar la mentira… You don’t even know how to season the lie to make it palatable.”

During the show, She decides actual small-claims court cases. The plaintiff and defendant agree before the show begins to drop their case. They have it decided by arbitration through the show. Winners of the cases are awarded from the show’s budget, so the losers do not actually “payback” the winners. Losing parties are usually also compensated for their appearances.

She was portrayed by Cecily Strong in a 2017 Saturday Night Live parody of The People’s Court. She presided over a case between President Donald Trump and the three judges of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
