Karen Duffy Sarcoidosis | Karen Duffy Paralyzed

In 1995, she was diagnosed with neurosarcoidosis, a rare form of the disease sarcoidosis. Her brain and spinal cord were affected, leaving her partially paralyzed. During an interview, she revealed that in 1995 during the Emmy Awards she had a bad headache but she managed to make it through.

“I had this really bad headache, and I started taking aspirins, and then I realized, this headache is really something that I’ve never experienced before.” She described the pain as “a burning, sharp pain that felt like I was being electrocuted, and it wasn’t consistent. It was a dull ache. It would be every 30 to 45 seconds.”

She visited the doctor who did a series of tests and the doctor narrowed the list of possible problems to multiple sclerosis, ALS, AIDS, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and sarcoidosis. After the doctor excluded the first four conditions the doctor concluded that she was suffering to a rare form of sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is a chronic inflammatory disease with symptoms ranging from lung and eye problems to arthritis and for Duffy it was chronic pain all over her body.

“I was losing balance; my gait was off. I lost feeling in my hands and in my feet. It was really a lot of the things I thought were going to pass.”

She underwent numerous treatments to manage the disease.

“Most important was the pain medication. If I didn’t have this, I would be curled up in a ball. It was just so overwhelmingly painful.”If I was going to have to live with a chronic illness, I didn’t want to be bitter. And if I got better I didn’t want to feel like ‘why me?’. Sarcoidosis isn’t some burden that I carry. It’s not a gift that I would have picked out for myself but now that I have it, it’s made me actually stronger. It’s made me braver.”

Karen Duffy and George Clooney

Karen and George Clooney have been friend for years. During an interview she revealed that Clooney was the one who encouraged them (with her husband) to have children and he also gifted them their first dog.

“[George] was the one who really helped us find the doctor so we could have a kid. He was like, ‘I want to see your face on somebody else.’…So I’m an animal agnostic and George has two Cocker Spaniels. He was like, ‘Duff I’m going to break you. And so he found us this unbelievable Cocker Spaniel.”

During her second book launch, Backbone: Living with Chronic Pain without Turning into One, Clooney sent her a tequila fountain as he was on paternity leave. Clooney also makes an appearance in the book.

As a blurb for the book Clooney wrote, “My friend Karen Duffy, who lives with unimaginable pain, has taught me so much; that my complaints are the most ridiculous in the world.”
