June Allyson also Eleanor Geisman was an actress, film, singer, and dancer. She has been on stage for the longest time possible since 1937 until her last appearance in 2001.

Glenn was Powell’s barber and he has been a spouse to June twice. First being after Powell’s death (1963-1965) and then from 1966 to 1970.

After Allyson has been single for six years, she got married to David in 1976 and stayed in the relationship until 2006. David Ashrow died later in 2003, of heart failure reasons.

Career Life

June’s first job was as a tap dancer paying 60 dollars but she had dropped from high school. Moving back to New York, Allyson found an actress job performing for Educational Pictures.

She was first appointed at a club with few acting roles. Later on, after performing in music arts, June was chosen to the “Best Foot Forward” version of 1943. Moreso, playing a small part, the reviews from the film were good and this urged the MGM supervisor to insist on signing her the contract. Allyson performed her first drama in 1964(Secret Drama).

June’s career in music

Before Eleanor became an actor she was a singer. She was placed as an opposite singer by Educational Film to Lee Sullivan. The songs she did include: Swing For Sale and pixilated among many others.

After the Educational Film was shut down, Allyson moved and played a co-starring to Hal Le Roy, a dancer. She participated as an understudy to Betty  Hutton and when ill, Allyson took the lead. When performing, the Broadway director saw her and gave her a contract at “Best Foot Forward film”.

Eleanor has been on the CBS playing in “the Dun Point Show” from 1959 to 1960. She classified it as the hardest thing to do and also in Los Angeles it was dismissed. Allyson later performed in other shows but retired after Powell’s death.

June, however, was back in the 1970s now staying until 2001 when she retired officially.


  1. In 1951,  June won the Golden Award for being the best in motion picture actress.
  2. Later, she had the Special Jury Prize for Ensemble Acting and was also mentioned the most popular photo female star of the year 1954.
  3. For contributions to the film industry, she was awarded on the Hollywood Hall of Fame the motion pictures star.
  4. In 1985, she received the Cannes Festival Distinguished Award.

June had an accident when she was a child at eight(1925) and from the doctor’s report, she would never be able to walk again. However, after several treatments, Allyson started to walk again.  In later years, Allyson had a hip joint replacement surgery in 2003 which caused her poor health.

Also, she was diagnosed with acute bronchitis and respiratory failure which caused her death in 2006, July 8. June Allyson died at her home in Ojai at the age of 88.
