Gretchen Carlson Biography

Gretchen Carlson is an American television commentator and author and the chairwoman of the Miss America board of directors. Carlson was crowned the 1989 Miss America while representing her native state of Minnesota.

She graduated from Stanford University with honors before embarking on a career in television.

Miss America Organization On January 1, 2018, Carlson was elected chairwoman of the board of directors of the Miss America Organization.

After a few months into her tenure as Chair of the Board of Miss America, 22 states held a vote of no confidence in the leadership of both Carlson and CEO Regina Hopper. They demanded their resignations, claiming a lack of transparency and non performing to best practices.

The former Miss Americas say that following the scandal the former CEO and chairman of the board exited. The group that signed the letter includes Suzette Charles. Suzette  who served several weeks as Miss America 1984 after Vanessa Williams resigned over a nude photo scandal, and Kate Shindle, Miss America 1998, who resigned from the Miss America board this summer.

In August 2018, Miss America 2018 Cara Mund wrote a letter to her fellow Miss America titleholders alleging that Carlson and Hopper “Silenced me, reduced me, discriminating  me, and essentially erased me in my role as Miss America.”

Mund went on to say that after the new board took over in January, she “Was given three talking points” and told to stick to them: That “Miss America is relevant”; that “The #MeToo movement started with a Miss America”; and that both she and Carlson were graduates of elite colleges.

Gaining experience as anchor and reporter for several local network affiliates, she joined CBS News as a correspondent in 2000 and became the co-host of the Saturday edition of The Early Show.

In 2005, she moved to Fox News Channel and became the co-host of the morning show Fox & Friends along with Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade.

In 2013, she announced her departure from Fox & Friends and soon thereafter launched a new program called The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson. Her contract with Fox News expired on June 23, 2016.

On July 6, she filed a lawsuit against then Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes claiming sexual harassment. Subsequently, dozens of other women also stepped forward to accuse Ailes of harassment, and Ailes was forced to resign under pressure.In September 2016, Carlson and 21st Century Fox settled the lawsuit for $20 million.

Gretchen Carlson’s break with Fox News was one of the defining moments in the recent evolution of the much-debated news network. The former “Fox & Friends” anchor sued the network in 2016, claiming sexual harassment by then-chief Roger Ailes, and settled for $20 million and an exceedingly uncommon public apology.

It was a great shift for a network critically setback by admitting to any wrongdoing. Thanks in part both to Carlson’s and then-Fox host Megyn Kelly’s openness around issues of harassment at Fox, both Ailes (who died in 2017) and, eventually, popular Fox News host Bill O’Reilly (the subject of several sexual harassment suits he was forced to settle at great expense) were pushed out of the network.

On “Breaking the Silence”  a two-hour news magazine-style investigation of sexual harassment in the workplace airing on Lifetime. Carlson travels the nation in order to witness the stories of those affected  by wrong conduct in businesses.

She also narrates her own experience in, at first, dressing casually as a newscaster; “I literally was sick,” she tells of the moments .

Carlson’s main audience is conservative America. Although most of  her most recent work on camera was at the talk show with which the current President begins his day. Carlson first rose to prominence as a small-town Minnesotan who rose to become Miss America

A bit too much of “Breaking the Silence,” though, is focused on Carlson polish that same image, as though these important stories were the raw material for a comeback.
