Gloria Loring Interview

Published: 10/20/2011

Source: blastzoneonline.wordpress.com

MW: Please introduce yourself.?

GL: When I speak or sing, the announcer intros me with this:
“Gloria Loring is the singer and actress who created “Liz Chandler” on Days Of Our Lives and was voted into the Top Ten Most Popular Actresses in daytime TV. She’s known for her #1 hit Friends and Lovers,†and as the co-composer and singer of the TV theme Facts Of Life. She is a certified yoga instructor and mother of R&B sensation Robin Thicke.”

MW: You were married to Alan Thicke for 16 years. How was that?

GL: Well, like any marriage, it was challenging, exhilarating, memorable and a deep learning experience.

MW: How did you meet him?

GL: I was singing at a supper club in Toronto and he called saying he was a writer for the CBC, then he asked me to dinner with his family. A novel approach!

MW: Tell me about your 2 children with him, Brennan and Robin?

GL: I am proud of and amazed by them both. Brennan is the father of Nana’s Rascal Boy, Tyler, and husband to Dolly who created Dolly Couture, http://www.dollycouture.com/. Robin is the R&B recording artist, producer, and songwriter whose work has been recognized by NARAS, and his wife Paula Patton is co-starring with Tom Cruise in the new Mission Impossible movie. Their gorgeous son is Julian Fuego. My sons and their wives are good-hearted and talented, and I am so blessed to be a part of their lives….

MW: Yourself and Mr. Thicke co-produced the theme songs to Diff’rent Strokes and The Facts Of Life. How did that come about?

GL: Alan had written some themes for game shows and Al Burton, a producer, asked him if he’d like to write for a new show, Diff’rent Strokes. Alan asked me to be a part of the writing process. It was fun, especially when they asked me to sing the song. It’s been on the air for thirty years.

MW: In 1980 you joined the cast of Days Of Our Lives as Liz Chandler Curtis. How did the role come about?

GL: My former manager joined an agency and sent me out on three readings in one week. I’d never had an acting role but had studied for ten years. After the first two readings, my confidence was up and the third audition was for the Days casting director. Then I was called back to read for the producer, then I screen tested and finally was offered the role. It was my first acting job and I was so excited!

MW: Why do you think the fans of Days Of Our Lives liked you so well?

GL: I think you’d have to ask them….

MW: o the fans still beg you to come back to Days?

GL: Yes, some do….

MW: Why did you leave the show in 1986?

GL: I was tired of being shot (!) every two years, plus my life was changing and I wanted new experiences. The week I left “Days,” my divorce became final, my first book was published and “Friends and Lovers” hit #1 on Billboard. What a week!

MW: What is your fondest memory of being on Days Of Our Lives?

GL: Working with Joe Gallison, “Neil.”

MW: Do you think Days fans will ever see you back in Salem again?

GL: I have talked with the new executive producer, so I’m waiting to hear if the production staff likes the storyline ideas I suggested….

MW: You also had a hit single with “Friends And Lovers.” Please tell me about that?
GL: It’s a long story covered in my new not-yet-published book, but basically the song was played for me by a producer and I knew instantly it was a hit. It took one year to get it recorded and released by a record company. Some good things just take time.

MW: You had a pretty successful music career after that. Could you give me more insight into that?

GL: I was a singer for many years before I joined “Days.” I’d toured, co-headlined in Vegas, recorded albums, sung on national TV shows, I even sang two nominated songs on the Academy Awards, but I’d not had a hit record. F&L and the “Days” audience gave me that and it added immensely to everything musical I did after that. Once you have a hit record, it’s yours forever!

MW: Tell me about your new book your working on Coincidence is God’s Way of Remaining Anonymous?

GL: My book proposal describes it: Coincidence is God’s Way of Remaining Anonymous is a celebrity autobiography detailing Gloria Loring’s spiritual transformation prompted by a series of extraordinary coincidences. Coincidence helped her raise $1 million for research after her 4-year-old son was diagnosed with diabetes; it arranged for a stranger to send her “Letters from God” during her divorce from actor-writer Alan Thicke, and it led her toward healing the trauma of childhood sexual abuse. Her stories will amaze and inspire readers, and her insights about coincidence describe how all of us can use coincidence for our own good and the good of those we love.

MW: When will it be out?

GL: It has been sent to several top publishers and we are awaiting word. I may decide to self-publish and create an e-book.

MW: What would you like to say in closing?

GL: Thank you!
