Gina Gaston is an American television journalist born on 14th January 1966 in Oxnard, California, United States. She is a lead anchor at KTRK-TV, ABC channel 13 in Houston, Texas. She was honored by the Associated Press Broadcasters for News Reporting and is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists. Gina graduated from the University of South California with a double major of journalism and communications and a minor in International Relations in 1987.

Speaking of her career, she joined channel 13 in 1992 to anchor the morning newscast with Tom Koch. She then left in 1999 to co-anchor HomePage, an afternoon show on MSNBC, with Ashleigh Banfield and Mika Brzezinski. The American magazine, Entertainment Weekly, that was published by Meredith Corporation, described the trio as “the Powerpuff Girls of journalism”. She then left MSNBC in 2000.

She then saw the need to return to channel 13 (2001) to anchor and report the 6 and 10 pm newscast, replacing long-time anchor Shara Fryer.

During the fall of 1992, Gina joined KTRK-TV, ABC13 as a co-anchor of the then newly expanded, and later top-rated 13 Eyewitness News at 6 am.

In 1999, she left ABC13 and moved to New York where she joined MSNBC still as a co-anchor on Home Page, an afternoon show. She worked together with Ashleigh Banfield and Mika Brzezinski on the show. They were even described as “the Powerpuff Girls of journalism” by Entertainment Weekly.

While at the MSNBC, she was also the network’s correspondent anchoring the 2000 presidential election from coast-to-coast, including the Florida ballot recounts.

Gina also anchored President George W. Bush’s inaugural activities, Elian Gonzales’ departure to Cuba, the U.S. bombing in the Iraqi no-fly zone, the Mid-East Violence and the South American earthquake. In addition, she also filled in as an anchor for NBC’s Weekend Today show.

While still at the station, she interviewed senators Kay Bailey Hutchison, Olympia Snowe, and Hillary Rodham Clinton. She also interviewed the Reverend Jesse Jackson, the Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson and Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating. She, however, left MSNBC in 2000.

ABC13 Return

In June 2011, she returned to ABC13 as a reporter and co-anchor for the Eyewitness News at 6 pm and Eyewitness News at 10 pm, replacing long-time anchor Shara Fryer. Some of the stories she has covered include the O.J. Simpson trial in Los Angeles, the Rockets Championships, and the Democratic National Convention.
