Frankie Delgado Interview

Interviewer: You were born in Tijuana?

Frankie Delgado: Frankie Delgado: I was born in San Diego, but I lived in Tijuana, and I would cross the border every day to go to school in San Diego.

Interviewer: How does a kid from the Southland end up running Hollywood?

Frankie Delgado: I started a Spring Break business when I was in college at San Diego State and put packages together and sent kids off to Rosarito [a beach community in Mexico just south of San Diego]. I was putting bus trips together and a lot of the people would go. I would package together hotels and parties at the clubs. They would have their wrist bands and everything was set up. My mom and dad did help me out, but this definitely helped put me through school. While in school I used to come up to LA just explore the scene with my friends and became mesmerized by it.

Interviewer: What was your first club experience?

Frankie Delgado: A place called Excess. I saw people like Britney Spears and Wilmer Valderrama and was in shock. At that time I was a big fan of Wilmer. It’s funny because today he’s actually a friend and like a big brother to me.

Interviewer: How did you become a part of the LA scene?

Frankie Delgado: I met the owner of Excess and asked him for a job right then and there. He had a couple of positions open and I worked as a busboy at night and helped in the office during the day. This guy really gave me my first opportunity in the industry, but I wasn’t really in it at first. After a while, there was this guy who I would always take care of and he became my friend little by little when he would come to the club. He was about to open a club himself and said, “I like what you’re doing here,” but in a way he was like, “You’re destined for more. Why are you doing this? Why don’t you come work for me at my place Element.”

That was the first place I promoted and I ran the door. It was a very humble club in the beginning. We had furniture from IKEA and wooden boxes as tables, but the place was raging. A lot of famous people would come through and that’s where I [formally] met Wilmer who actually introduced me to a lot of people.

Interviewer: Was Wilmer already on TV then?

Frankie Delgado: Yes, he was already the “it” guy. You always need someone. People say, “I did it on my own.” I didn’t do it on my own. I definitely had help from people that really cared about me and I am still friends with them all.

Interviewer: And then came The Hills?

Frankie Delgado: I actually started on a show called 24/7. It was kind of like an Entourage. I was the promoter/ladies’ man; a guy for everything. It was on MTV and because I was friends with the Laguna Beach crew, Lauren Conrad would always come to my places. It was a natural fit.

Interviewer: Do you think The Hills helped propel your career?

Frankie Delgado: You know what? Everything helped propel my career and it obviously gave me a little bit of a head start on everyone. It was easier to connect with people that wanted to go out.

Interviewer: And you then went on to curate some pretty amazing places.

Frankie Delgado: I did a place called Area that was very successful. At the same time, my partners were doing a place called Le Deux. I then did Voyeur, My House, Beaches Madhouse, Greystone Manor and worked with Hooray Henry’s.

Interviewer: So pretty much every notable club to have opened in the past decade. And that brings us to today where you have just helped SBE open Hyde Sunset.

Frankie Delgado: I am very excited about this project as it is truly something new, something outside the box, something that no one’s doing here in LA. It is something that gives people a little taste of New York and with a great culinary component.
