Dean Devlin co-wrote Stargate, the first movie to have a website, with director Roland Emmerich. He also served as the producer and Emmerich as director.

Stargate is a 1994 science fiction adventure film released through Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and Carolco Pictures. Written by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, the film is the first release in the Stargate franchise. The film stars Kurt Russell, Alexis Cruz, James Spader, Jaye Davidson, Mili Avital, and Viveca Lindfors.

The plot centers on the premise of a “Stargate”, an ancient ring-shaped device that creates a wormhole enabling travel to a similar device elsewhere in the universe. The film’s central plot explores the theory of extraterrestrial beings having an influence upon human civilization.

Director’s cut

The director’s cut had several scenes which were cut from the theatrical release. The first such scene took place immediately after the excavation of the Stargate in 1928 and showed petrified Horus guards near the cover stones; the producers had tried to introduce the idea that beings had attempted to come through the Stargate after its burial, but they cut the scene for time concerns.

Dean Devlin gradually began writing scripts. His first produced screenplay was for Universal Soldier. He reached prominence as a writer/producer working alongside director Roland Emmerich, with whom he teamed after appearing in Emmerich’s film Moon 44. Together they co-wrote and produced Stargate, the first movie to have a web site.

The team then produced Independence Day and Godzilla. They split following the 2000 Mel Gibson film The Patriot, but re-teamed to film Independence Day: Resurgence in 2015. Devlin has also produced Cellular, Who Killed the Electric Car?, and Flyboys.
