Daniel Dowling Career
Three days after graduation, he was hired at WCAX for the Sunday evening news. In April 1999, Dan moved to Weekend News, and in March 2000, he assumed the forecasting duties on the Channel 3 News at 11 pm weeknights. He is now the meteorologist for the 5 pm weeknight newscast as well. For more information on WCAX please click here.
He is also an adjunct professor of broadcast meteorology at Lyndon State College. Dowling got involved in the broadcasting side by late junior year, but there wasn’t much of a campus television station. There was very little oversight from faculty there.
He graduated with a degree in meteorology but was poorly prepared to get his first job at a local television station. Don had a horrible VHS tape of mish-mashed weathercasts that he had done in his last month on campus. It was dubbed and redubbed so many times that it was barely audible by the time he sent it out.Dan Dowling Photo
Don mailed at least 40 tapes up and down the east coast and needless to say, the phone never rang. Dowling was done with college. The loans were coming due, and there was no way in the world he would become a broadcast met with the resume tape or the level of experience that he had.
He ended up going back to school at SUNY Plattsburgh, which didn’t have a meteorology program. Equally important, Don did have a very good broadcasting program. It took a little convincing, but he got the campus station to start letting him do evening weathercasts during the commercial breaks.
They gave him the opportunity to learn how to shoot and edit as well. Dowling picked up his second bachelor’s degree after three semesters. Three days after graduation he had an interview for a part-time position at WCAX-TV. I’ve been there ever since.
In 2007, I was given the chance to teach a few classes at Lyndon State College. For the last several years, he made the commute across the state of Vermont twice a week and teach broadcast performance to meteorology majors. Don makes absolutely sure that no one goes through the program and is not ready to get a job after graduation.
