A 2-year-old boy has died hours after he shot himself in the chest Wednesday afternoon in East Lake area of north Pinellas County.
Police tape surrounds the home at 1094 Misty Hollow Lane, but the focus of the investigation is taken away on the back of a tow truck for processing. According to the Pinellas County sheriff, a tragic accident occurred inside the vehicle.
“Two and a half-year-old Kaleb was able to get a gun, turn the gun to his chest, pull the trigger and shoot and kill himself,” said Sheriff Bob Gualtieri.
As investigators processed the scene, it was a stark reminder for gun safety. There was no lock on the .380-caliber weapon that belongs to Kaleb’s father, Kevin Ahle.
“They took reasonable steps, and you can lawfully keep a gun in a vehicle in the glove box. It was secured in the glove box itself,” said Gualtieri.
The sheriff said several witnesses corroborated the story that the child was in the vehicle alone, and at this point, it does not appear that any charges will be filed.
The family was getting ready to leave home in the father’s car when Kaleb got into the vehicle, where the gun was in the glove box. Kaleb found the weapon and shot himself in the chest.
