This is a multinational law firm based in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. It was co-founded as Baker & McKenzie by Russell Baker and John McKenzie, in 1949.

A lawyer in Venezuela contacted Baker McKenzie about opening a joint venture office in Caracas. He considered the suggestion and this made Baker McKenzie become an international firm beginning in 1955.

Later on, the firm became the first international law firm to enter many local markets in the Asia Pacific region, starting in 1963 with the Philippines, followed by Sydney, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Taipei.

In October 2012, the law firm launched a cross-border listings app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, which was the first of its kind. The app is an interactive legal tool designed to help professional users compare as well as consider global listing options.

On 17 October 2018, global law firm Baker McKenzie announced plans for a new Center in Tampa, Florida in the United States. This will create more than 300 new high-quality jobs.

The Tampa office will provide expert support to Baker McKenzie and its global clients in legal services, finance, IT, knowledge management, operations, business development, marketing, and talent.

The office is expected to be up and running at the beginning of 2020. Jamie Lawless will be the new Executive Director for the Tampa Center.

On 20 February 2018, Baker McKenzie moved its Dallas office to the 1900 Pearl Building, 1900 N. Pearl St, Suite 1500. The building is managed by Lincoln Property Co. and owned by Goldman Sachs & Co. It was designed by architectural firm Gensler. The Dallas office houses a professional staff and team of 65 lawyers.
