Annette de la Renta Biography
Annette de la Renta (Anne France Mannheimer) is an American philanthropist and socialite who was named to the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 1973.
She serves on the boards of the Metropolitan Museum, the New York Public Library, the Morgan Library, the Animal Medical Center, and also the Engelhard Foundation. Annette also served on the board of directors of Rockefeller University for 25 years, and now serves as a trustee emeritus.

Anne was born the only child of a German Jewish banker, Fritz Mannheimer, and his Roman Catholic wife, Marie Antoinette Jeanne Reiss. His father died in 1939 before Anne’s death while her mother died in 2004.
Her German-born maternal grandfather, Hugo Reiss, was a prominent German Jewish businessman in Shanghai, China, where he then served as the Brazilian consul. Her maternal grandmother, Ignatia Mary Valerie Murphy, was a Roman Catholic of Irish descent from San Francisco, California. After her mother moved to the United States and remarried, Annette was adopted by her stepfather, Charles W. Engelhard Jr., an industrial magnate.

Annette married private investor Samuel Pryor Reed (1934 – 2005) in a Roman Catholic ceremony in Bernardsville, New Jersey in 1960. Samuel was a vice president of Engelhard Industries, the minerals conglomerate. He later owned the American Heritage magazine. The couple later split but the couple had three children together
Annette and Reed have two daughters: Beatrice Anne Reed who has been married thrice, first to Roger Albert Morrison, she then married David Niven Jr., a son of the actor David Niven and had a third marriage with David Phelps, a California real estate attorney, and Eliza Reed, who married Alexander Lytton Bolen in Newark, New Jersey, USA. Lytton serves as CEO of Oscar de la Renta, L.L.C.
Their son Charles Reed, married Natalie Wigotsky, a clinical psychologist. Annette married fashion designer Oscar de la Renta in La Romana, the Dominican Republic on 26 December 1989. She became the step-mother of his adopted son, Moises de la Renta.
Renta was appointed a temporary guardian of the 104-year-old Brooke Astor, a long-time friend on 26 July 2006. In the wake of elder abuse allegations being made against Astor’s son, Anthony Dryden Marshall. Renta became a permanent guardian on 13 October 2006. Her husband, Oscar de la Renta, died of cancer on 20 October 2014, at age 82.
