In 2012 George Herbert Walker Bush was quoted as saying his wife Barbara was the “number one person in his life.”

Their love and commitment inspired an entire nation and it all started when they were just teenagers.

“I have climbed the highest mountain in the world, but even that cannot hold a candle to being Barb’s husband.” George said.

The love of a lifetime starting during their Christmas break in 1941 at the Greenwich Country Club’s annual Christmas dance.

“I could hardly breathe I thought he was so beautiful,” Barbara said.

A relationship even withstanding the times of war, keeping up their relationship through letters, thoughts, and tributes.

His son, George W. Bush, said he never forgot his reason for fighting.

“He would complete 58 combat missions, these were tough days, and if you look closely at the photographs of the planes he flew you will find you will find what kept him going is the name he had painted under his cockpit… Barbara.” Bush said.

“It should be simple for me to tell you how desperately happy I was to open the paper and see the announcement of our engagement, but somehow I can’t possibly say all in a letter I’d like to.” George said.

Married weeks after his return from service, Barbara stood beside, not behind her husband as he rose through the political ranks.

The two aged gracefully together, celebrating anniversaries as they did everything else, together with family.

And after celebrating their 73rd on January 6th, and holding his wife’s hand until the moment she passed in April the former first couple now, will be re united again.

Mister Bush was asked by his granddaughter in 2012 who he’d like to see in heaven when is time comes, and his answer was almost immediate.

“If Barbara precedes me, I’ll probably go with her.”
